National Supreme Championship Rules

The AOA National Alpaca Show crowns National Supreme Champions, one of the most prestigious honors in the Show System. Awards are presented to suri and huacaya males and females in both light and dark color groups, resulting in eight AOA National Supreme Champions.

Paths to the National Supreme Championship

There are two ways for an alpaca to qualify for the National Supreme Championship competition:

Color Halter Path

  • Compete in regular color halter classes at the AOA National Show. (See “Invited Champion” format below.)

Bred and Owned Path

  • Compete in the regular Bred and Owned class at the AOA National Show. (See “Invited Champion” format below.)

Final-round National Color Champions and Best Bred and Owned winners will earn a place in one of the following National Supreme Championship classes:

  • AOA National Supreme Championship — Light Huacaya Male
  • AOA National Supreme Championship — Light Huacaya Female
  • AOA National Supreme Championship — Light Suri Male
  • AOA National Supreme Championship — Light Suri Female
  • AOA National Supreme Championship — Dark Huacaya Male
  • AOA National Supreme Championship — Dark Huacaya Female
  • AOA National Supreme Championship — Dark Suri Male
  • AOA National Supreme Championship — Dark Suri Female

The National Supreme Championship competition takes place at the conclusion of the show and is judged collectively by all AOA National Show Halter Judges. Winners are selected and crowned immediately.

Invited Champions Halter Class Defined

To qualify as an Invited Champion at the AOA National Show, an alpaca must have won a championship or Best Bred and Owned at an AOA Certified Show during the previous calendar year. Exhibitors with a qualifying alpaca may enter that alpaca as an Invited Champion through the registration system.

Additional Details

  • Invited Champions do not compete in a separate class. They advance directly to the National Color Championship, along with the winners of the regular classes.
  • Regular class winners and Invited Champions compete together to determine the National Color Champion, who then advances to the AOA National Supreme Championship.
  • Invited Champions receive six points for their entry at the AOA National Show, plus any additional awards earned.
  • Invited Best Bred and Owned winners advance directly to the AOA National Show Best Bred and Owned Class, along with regular class winners, to determine the Best Bred and Owned competitor for the National Supreme Championship.
  • Invited Best Bred and Owned entries receive six points for their entry at the AOA National Show, plus any additional awards earned.
  • Alpacas entered in Best Bred and Owned classes must be owned by the exhibitor and must be from dams owned by the exhibitor at the time the dams were bred, as documented on the alpaca registration certificates.
  • All alpacas entered in the show, regardless of qualification path, may compete in group production classes.
  • There are no Judges’ Choice awards for the National Halter Show. The AOA National Supreme Champion awards supersede those awards.
  • National Supreme Champions earn points toward the AOA Breeders Cup Award.
  • All alpacas are subject to compliance checks for fleece length and color. Alpacas will be placed in their appropriate color class at the National Halter Show, regardless of classifications assigned at previous shows.
