Welcome to the Autumn issue of
Alpacas Magazine,
the arrival of which means alpaca farms every-
where are wrapping up their year and getting ready
for next one. That’s true of magazine editors, too.
By the time you read this, the magazine team will
be hard at work gathering material for the 2013
Herdsire issue.
It really does take a team to keep our indus-
try’s official publication at the top of its game.
You always see my face at the top of this column,
but I suspect the rest of the magazine team is
not as well recognized.
Therefore, I’m using my editorial license to in-
troduce Team
AM:
Annie Segal, whose brilliance
as a designer explains why each issue of
Alpacas
Magazine
looks so gorgeous, and Steph Pride,
whose hard work and dedication as our advertis-
ing manager makes what we do possible.
Award-winning designer Annie Segal has been
with
Alpacas Magazine
since 1998. Annie has a
degree in graphic design from Syracuse Univer-
sity, and has worked with publications around
the globe. She has extensive experience in
magazine work, including two leading quilting
magazines and regional tourism publications, as
well as handling book design. Annie runs her
own graphic design business, Design Horizon
Studio, from Bend, Oregon. She can be reached
at
anniesegal@gmail.com.Steph Pride brings 22 years of experience with
the camelid community to
Alpacas Magazine.
When not working on the magazine, Steph is
the Production Manager/Ad Sales Manager at
Able Printing Company in Manhattan, Kansas.
Steph headed ad sales and graphic design for
Alpacas Magazine
from 1990 to 1994, and has
been Advertising Manager since 1999. She has
many years of working with advertisers on
behalf of AOBA, from the
Farm and Ranch
Guide
(now the
Alpaca Owner’s Guide),
auction
catalogs and brochures, to the membership
directory and industry newsletters. Steph can be
reached at
steph.pride@ableprintingcompany.com.Please join me in thanking these two for all
their hard work on behalf of our industry and
our favorite magazine! And while I’m at it, kudos
are also due to our writers and photographers,
whose creativity and artistic sense never ceases
to amaze me. I should mention, too, our advertisers,
without whom we would not exist. Each issue
of
Alpacas Magazine
is a perfect example of the
excellence that happens through the collaboration
of a great many people working toward the
same goal.
Now, back to this issue… inside you’ll find
“skeins” of good ideas for using this year’s fiber
crop, from hats to handcrafts, from mills to spin-
offs. But that’s not all. We’ve also included the
results from the AOBA National Show, a fright-
ening tale about one farm’s wildfire experience,
and some “how-to’s” for the handy amongst us.
We hope you enjoy the read!
