or many years, I have wanted to make a man’s crew neck
sweater—one that did not look like it was row upon row
of single or double crochet, something that has a little more style to it.
I was able to find loads of patterns for cardigans, but nothing that
excited me in a crew or turtleneck. I have never been much of
a cardigan person, so I was slowly beginning to give up on
the idea altogether.

Colorado alpaca breeder Carl McGill learned to
crochet when very young, an art his mother
taught him and which he perfected through
the years. Carl, always willing to lend a hand,
taught many a class in the art of the crochet
hook for AOBA and at affiliate events. His
students found him to be funny, warm, a
great teacher and a very patient man.
Unfortunately, after a long illness, Carl
passed away in September of this year. We are
reprinting this story from the Summer, 2003
issue, in memory of Carl and his dedication
to alpacas and the alpaca industry.
